Since 1981, NorCal has provided support for domestic and international projects with funds raised at conferences and other RPCV gatherings.

NorCal's Grants Program provides funds for community development projects all around our planet. These Grants are given to worthy organizations whose community efforts can benefit from $500-2,000. Donations may be sent to NorCal Peace Corps Association, P.O. Box 2547, San Francisco, CA 94126. NorCal maintains 501(c)(3) status and donations may be tax-deductible.

Sample List of Projects Funded by NorCal

Take a look at the contributions we have made around the world. Here is a partial list from the last 7 years:

Africa:
• $400 went to the Katwe Youth Furniture and Metal Works (KYFMW) in Katwe, Kampala, Uganda (2009)
• $1,150 for kitchen equipment to the Vocational Training School at Bwanda, Masaka, Uganda (2004)
• $1,000 to the Village Bicycle Project in Ghana (2000)
• Over $2000 to the Lofigue Vaccination Center in Mali (1999)

Eastern Europe:
• $500 to the Green Balkans Wildlife and Breeding Center, Bulgaria (2003)

Caribbean:
• Over $2000 for the Bajanbonico Arriba food bridge in Dominican Republic (1999)
• $500 for Unidos: Building Home, Building Hope in Dominican Republic (2004)

Asia:
• $1,860 Grupo Maria de Nazare (GMN) Women s Cooperative in Aileu, Timor-Leste (East Timor) near Indonesia (2009)
• $1000 for the Ha Village primary school in Hue Province, Vietnam (2004)

Central America:
• $1000+ to the Familias Saludables Clinic on Roatan Island, Honduras (2004)
• $500 for a street theater group in San Martin Jilotepeque, Guatemala (2004)

South America:
• $1,100 to Cristobal Colon, Ecuador, for their Waste Management project (2003)
• $1,000 to the Quail Production Project near Puno, Peru (2000)

Grants Committee

Each of NorCal's five member groups is represented on the Grants Committee. If you are a NorCal Member interested in serving on the Grants Committee, please contact a NorCal Board Member.

Grants Criteria

NorCal looks for varied international and domestic project opportunities benefiting different groups of people, in keeping with the spirit and idea of Peace Corps. The persons requesting funds must demonstrate commitment to the project by providing community labor, monetary contributions, local resources and/or training.

We encourage projects submitted by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and current Peace Corps Volunteers from Northern California.

NorCal looks for opportunities to:
• totally fund a project
• complete necessary funding so the project can get started
• expand or replicate a successful project.

Selection Criteria

The prospective project will be evaluated for its potential to meet as many of the following as possible:
1. Be technically and economically feasible.
2. Improve the general welfare of the community.
3. Ensure that all those actively involved in the project will benefit from the results.
4. Address community needs.
5. Facilitate the transfer of technology, skills and knowledge to others.
6. Foster self-sufficiency.

Special notes:

• Project funding does not guarantee availability of future funds.
• Funding will not be provided for individuals, scholarships, travel, or general operating expenses.

Application Process

Next Application Deadline: July 31, 2010.

Funds available: based on funds raised in 2009-2010.

Interested parties must submit a proposal which contains the following information:
• Name and address of the organization.
• Local name, address, and phone when organization is overseas.
• NorCal RPCV knowledgeable of organization and project.
• General description of the organization, including goals, purpose, a brief history of previous and current work, and source of funding.
• Organization budget.
• Project title and detailed description.
• How project meets Selection Criteria (outlined on previous page).
• Key personnel and their responsibilities for the project.
• Project budget in detail.
• Amount and purpose of funding requested from NorCal.
