Beekeeping and Farm Work Day in Alameda

28 Sep 2019
9:00am - 3:00pm PDT

Come beekeeping with RPCV Noah Brod and volunteer at the Alameda Collaborative farm for an afternoon.

The Alameda Point Collaborative is a supportive housing community that uses all its resources to help families and individuals break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.  They are the largest supportive housing provider for homeless families in Alameda County, and offer a wide range of services give residents the tools they need for long-term success.

One of the services that APC offers is a small, diversified working farm that produces thousands of pounds of sustainably grown produce each year. They are a social enterprise of Alameda Point Collaborative and use their passion for food and the environment to support APC residents as they move toward economic self-sufficiency and greater health and wellness. Proceeds from the CSA (community supported agriculture) program and other sales activities are pumped back into APC’s programs and activities for its resident community.

This is a HONEY HARVEST! Come prepared to get sticky! Noah will be giving a honey harvesting lesson and a variety of alternative (non-bee-related) farm tasks are also available for those that would like to keep their distance.

Note: While bee stings are rare in general, they are more likely to occur during a honey harvest.  Last year there were 7 stings over the course of the entire day.

If you would like to work with the bees you are encouraged to wear light-colored clothing, close-toed shoes, and long sleeves, and pants.  You should also avoid strong smelling lotions, perfumes, or colognes.  We have ~5 veils, suits and gloves to share (which is about the maximum number we should have in the yard at a time) and will do our best to rotate people in and out.

The farm is open for working until 2:30, and we will be harvesting/filtering/bottling honey from our 9 hives between 9:00AM until 3:00PM.

To save time, those interested can fill out the following waiver from APC online before arrival.
