THE DINNER WAS A GREAT SUCCESS. YOU CAN STILL DONATE

Sunflowers (or “soniashnyk”) are spectacular, highly productive and a major agricultural export of Ukraine. They are also the national flower of Ukraine and are a powerful symbol of the resistance of the Ukrainian people to the invasion by Russia. The sunflower is Ukraine's national flower and has been grown on its central and eastern steppes since the middle of the 18th century, cultivated for its seeds, which are eaten as a snack, or crushed into oil, a key ingredient in cooking and an export product of vital importance Together, at this Fund Raiser co-sponsored by Odd Fellows Lodge 70 and NorCal Peace Corps Association, we'll celebrate the resilience of the Ukrainian people as we gather for a few hours in Cupertino (exact address with your ticket confirmation).

Ukrainians are very friendly and welcoming. They love large groups and gatherings, always help each other and consider all people around them to be their best friends. Thus, if you happen to come to a party in Ukraine, don’t worry, you’ll definitely make some friends, get to chat, drink, listen to Ukrainian music, and maybe learn Ukrainian words of greeting and friendship, plus a song or two. For sure, we will enjoy a traditional Ukrainian dinner prepared by RPCVs who served in the town of Drohobych.

The town’s 80,000 citizens are struggling to host approximately 25,000 internally displaced refugees. They are in desperate need of our help, so NorCal PCA is working with others to get money to the NGO the Ukranian charity ЦЕХ ДОБРОТИ, which in Ukrainian means THE GOODNESS SHOP. Toni Gale worked with this charity during her PCV service. She personally knows the director and many of the staff. Before the invasion the Goodness Shop’s activities were in support of seriously ill children and adults in the fight against cancer. Now its staff and their many volunteer work tirelessly to support the army and give aid to the many internally displaced refugees that have flocked to Drohobych. To learn more, visit https://www.cdt.org.ua/. Please buy a ticket to this celebration of support and/or donate money to for this cause. If you wish to donate an amount other than the amounts shown, to volunteer in anyway, to help publicize the even, or to ask questions please contact our lead for this event: Antonia Gale <antoniagale88@gmail.com>. Antonia is the Treasurer for NorCalPCA.

You will find that Ukrainian people are very family oriented. For this reason, most customs are related to family holidays or events. One custom is for Ukrainians to greet their guests with bread and salt. In doing so, they are wishing them wealth (round bread or “Kolach” is a symbol of wealth) and are banishing evil spirits (salt is a symbol of the purity of the soul). You can help banish evil spirits by signing up to ride or drive at the carpool link you'll get when buy a ticket.
